British Airways is currently experiencing a "technical issue" resulting in delays for passengers and difficulties for staff.

BA have issued a statement regarding apologising for the inconvenience as they work on a solution.

Reports suggest passengers are experiencing delays at its Heathrow Terminal 5 base with customers facing difficulty checking in and boarding their flights.

There have also been unconfirmed reports that the crew on some flights have been forced to use "personal phones" to contact their office for a new flight plan.

An error on BA's website has also been spotted on the passenger check in page with customers getting a "can't be completed right now" message.

The airline was forced into making a statement after a number of passengers complained on social media.

One user on Twitter said: "Good to see @British_Airways on top of their IT systems again… Currently sat on plane @BELFASTCITY_AIR with no idea of departure. All flight plans “disappeared” according to the pilot, and no BA planes in or out of @HeathrowAirport."

Another user said: "Been stuck at Heathrow for 2.5 hours unable to check in with @British_Airways due to them experiencing a 'global IT system failure'… no one seems to have answers or know what’s going on #BritishAirways."

One passenger, who says they are stuck on the tarmac in Barcelona, said: "Were just about to take off but final payload info not received by flight deck due to IT issue at Heathrow. Now sitting waiting for more information."

According to reports, it is believed that the company's IT problems only affect operations at Heathrow and those flights travelling to the London airport.

The statement from BA said: "We're investigating and working hard to resolve a technical issue and apologise for the inconvenience.

"We will provide further updates as quickly as possible."

BA was forced to cancel or delay 500 flights globally last month due to global IT failures.

The airline has been hit with problems following its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw 13,000 jobs axed.
