A young British tourist was killed in a horror helicopter accident while on holiday with his family in Greece.
The 21-year-old, who has not been named, and at least one of his siblings were flying from Mykonos to Sparta, near Athens, in the hired aircraft.
According to Greek media, he got out of the helicopter – seemingly unaware the propeller was still spinning – and headed for the tail.
His sibling and the pilot were then left watching horrified as the man was hit by the tail rotor.
The pilot, who also witnessed the tragedy which happened around 6.20pm yesterday, reportedly radioed their colleague on board of another helicopter, which had the man’s parents on.
A source told The Sun: ‘The pilot saw what had happened and decided to spare the parents the sight of their son – it was horrendous.
‘He flew on to another helipad at Athens where the couple were consoled as it was confirmed that the young man was dead.
‘The cause is being investigated but it remains unclear why this happened – or was allowed to happen when rotor blades pose such an obvious danger.’
Emergency services rushed to the private helipad on the outskirts of the Greek capital.
But it is thought the young man died instantly when he was struck by the helicopter blades.
It is still unclear how the incident happened but the events that led to it are being investigated.
‘We are talking about a tragedy – an unprecedented tragedy – a tragedy that should never have happened,’ a police source told the newspaper.
