Brits to boycott France over travel chaos – and book staycations in 27C Britain

Brit holidaymakers were urged to boycott France for triggering travel chaos hell – and book a UK staycation in 27C sunshine.

Temperatures are expected to rocket again this weekend, making blistering Britain as warm as most European holiday hotspots.

As families queued for up to 21 hours to get to the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone MPs urged Brits to ditch the continent and holiday at home.

John Redwood said: "If France carries on blocking entry people should go somewhere else on holiday. Go somewhere that welcomes you.’’

Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey said it was a lot harder to get in and out of France "than other countries and systems worked a lot more smoothly elsewhere".

France blamed the delays on Brexit and urged the UK to beg Brussels to allow it freedom of movement with the European Union.

François Decoster, vice president of the Haute-de-France region which includes Calais, claimed Britain had gone back 30 years and should ask to join Schengen – the arrangement allowing free movement of people on the continent.

But the Prime Minister’s official spokesman said the problems were not Brexit-related and due to a combination of factors "including a shortage of French border control staff".

"These are not scenes that we think are necessitated by leaving the European Union,’’ the spokesman said.

"We think we have operational procedures and processes in place that do not need to see these levels of queues.’’

Former foreign secretary Jeremy Hunt said "furious" was punishing Britain for Brexit and held a grudge against out-going PM Boris Johnson for delivering it.

He suggested France was being over-officious with stamping passports of every traveller.

"There is a lack of willingness in the French Government to be cooperative with Britain in any way at all because they are furious about Brexit, they are furious with Boris, they think we have mucked up their long term plan for a united Europe,’’ he said.

"I hope that when we have a new PM that we can have a reset with France and the EU so we can cooperate as good neighbours should.’’

Border chiefs from both countries were meeting today in a bid to hammer out a solution.
