Brussels must answer to growing anti-EU rage across Europe — and not by destroying Brexit

Are EU deaf?

FIRST came Brexit. Now a majority in Italy’s election have backed Eurosceptic parties. Will Brussels listen? We doubt it.

More sensible politicians and bureaucrats might take soaring anti-EU rage across Europe as their cue to throttle back on the grand federal project.

A sign that decades of unaccountable interference in our democracies, while abandoning millions to unemployment and open borders, has been disastrous.Brussels will doubtless take exactly the wrong course and double-down.

For them the EU is a religion — just as it is here for diehard Europhiles who would sacrifice Britain to Venezuelan-style socialist squalor if it would only keep us in the Brussels club.

Italy’s shock vote will probably harden the EU’s resolve. They will be desperate to keep their dream alive, via a crushing victory over Brexit Britain.

Theresa May’s job may have got tougher.

Cam on down

DAVID Cameron ought perhaps to be the last person giving his successor tactical advice on negotiating with Brussels.

After all, they sent him packing, empty-handed and humiliated. But to give Mr Cameron credit he has since changed his tune a little on Brexit.

Once, he said it would trigger World War Three. Now he grudgingly admits the referendum aftermath wasn’t as bad as he’d feared.

And he is conspicuously absent from the increasingly unhinged Remainer clique of ex-PMs and their lackeys trying to reverse our decision.

If Mr Cameron can alert Mrs May to the traps Brussels will set — and the sneering arrogance certain to confront her — his advice will be an asset.

Fat lot of good

WHEN the Government backed the idiotic sugar tax, we warned it was just the start.

Now the nanny-state fanatics of Public Health England want to reduce calories in our sarnies, burgers, pizzas, crisps and biscuits by a fifth.

That means making them smaller or less tasty, as makers have with chocolate and fizzy drinks. If that doesn’t work, lose another fifth, maybe. Or a third.

The Government must flatly reject it.

Cutting our daily calories shouldn’t mean Big Brother tampering with grub we love. That erodes quality of life for all, including those with no weight problem.

We need far better education about our diet. We need more exercise and an investment in sports facilities.

Diners and shoppers can be informed about calories in a meal, and their daily “allowance”, without being deprived of treats like naughty infants.

Yes, Britain has an unhealthy weight problem. But there’s a snobbery about the professional meddlers at Public Health England who seek to victimise and bully the poorest for what they eat.

It’s stomach-churning.
