Café lets customers pay what they feel food is worth – but how much would YOU offer? – The Sun

A café is allowing customers to pay how much they feel their meals are worth – but how much would you offer?

The restaurant located inside the Manchester Art Gallery, near the city centre, allows families to pick any dish from the children’s menu and decide for themselves how much they would like to pay.

Customers have the option to pay whatever they want – and there is no suggested donation.

Some people over-pay – but all contributions are anonymous meaning nobody knows how much you've paid.

The idea behind the unusual concept is to make healthy meals affordable to everyone.

It was started after the art gallery teamed up with Real Junk Food Manchester, a not-for-profit company which sources food from supermarkets, wholesalers and other food businesses which has been removed from sale but is fine to eat and would otherwise go to waste.

Chef Mary-Ellen McTague, who help start the project, said: “All Real Junk Food produce is sold on a pay-as-you-feel basis so there's no suggested donation.

“You can pay as much or as little as you want or can afford. The idea is that it doesn't get in the way of anyone accessing the food, and it's anonymous so no one else would know what you've paid.”

She added that some people even over-pay in a bid to the support the project.

Mary said: “We felt it was a good fit for the art gallery because it's free entry and open to all, and so we wanted to remove as many barriers as possible to people coming and enjoying everything the gallery has to offer.”

The menu which changes regularly boasts chicken stew and mash, vegetable stew and mash and scones with honey.

A spokesman for the Gallery Café said: “We believe that good food should be available to everyone. We work with Real Junk Food Manchester to offer a pay-as-you-feel menu for children – delicious, healthy meals that are affordable for families.

"Manchester Art Gallery is for everyone, a civic space in the heart of the city that’s open to all. But we know that families often struggle with the cost of eating out.

“By sourcing ingredients from Real Junk Food Manchester we can help make family visits that bit easier.”
