Emergency services have been called to a Christmas Market in the UK this evening (Saturday, November 26) after reports of a car being driven into the crowd.
Eyewitnesses at Congleton Christmas Market in Cheshire say there were around 800 people including families with small children enjoying the festivities, reports StokeonTrentLive.
Police are now at the scene and have been pictured outside the town Wetherspoons pub.
The car reportedly came flying down the High Street where the stalls were set up, with people screaming and jumping out of the way.
Police confirmed no one was hurt and that three men have been arrested.
They also said a VW Golf was found abandoned a short while after the incident, and that the incident "doesn’t appear to be a terror-related".
A Cheshire Police statement read: "Three people have been arrested following an incident in Congleton town centre this afternoon.
"It occurred shortly after 4pm and involved a silver Volkswagen Golf, which turned down the pedestrianised area of Bridge Street where the market was taking place, causing alarm to shoppers and residents.
"Fortunately, no-one was hurt during the incident.
"The car was found abandoned a short time later. Three men have been arrested and are in custody.
"Officers remain at the scene, providing a highly visible presence to reassure people."
Steve Brown, owner of Steve Brown Antiques on the High Street, described the scenes as "absolutely horrendous".
The 58-year-old told StokeonTrentLive: "A car has come screeching down the High Street – which is full of stalls and people. There are hundreds of people here, people with kids and dogs and lots of traders."
"He must of been doing at least 50mph. People were jumping out of the way. I saw one elderly lady who had to jump out of the way – she's very shook up. We all are."
Steve says people ran after the driver in the car, who he says didn't stop. He added: "We don't really know what's happening yet, but the police are here now."
Mandy Neville, 53, saw the incident during her shift at Greggs
She told StokeonTrentLive: “It came flying past the window and broke the sign that we have outside. That’s the only damage that we got.
“There was a woman and a kid, they were a bit shaken up. The woman said that she’d hurt her leg. She didn’t know if something had hit her on the leg as the car came crashing through, but no one was actually injured properly.
“We brought the lad in here and gave him a drink. He was quite shook-up. He was only a young lad, I think he was about ten.
“The ambulance people came and were checking him over.”
