He may have been unable to attend his granddaughter Princess Lilibet’s christening in California earlier this month.
But King Charles was delighted to share in another family’s joy.
The 74-year-old monarch was in the congregation of a Cotswolds church last Sunday when he discovered six-month-old Alice Elizabeth Windell was being baptised.
Her delighted parents, Christopher and Rebecca, happily posed for photos with their daughter after the ‘lovely and totally unexpected surprise’.

As King he is now the Supreme Governor of the Church of England, but Charles has long been a regular Sunday worshipper, quietly visiting a local church wherever he is in the country.
His youngest grandchild, Lilibet, one, was christened in California on March 3 at Harry and Meghan’s Montecito mansion, the couple recently told the US celebrity magazine People.
It was subsequently claimed by journalists with close links to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that they invited the King, Queen Consort and the Prince and Princess of Wales but none attended.
However, the British sovereign and his wife could never have flown to the US for a private family event of this sort because of security and pressing affairs of state.
William and Kate are also no longer speaking to the Sussexes after Harry’s repeated attacks on them and the Royal Family as part of their lucrative commercial media deals in the US.

It was reported that there were 20 to 30 guests present, including Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland, and billionaire entertainment mogul Tyler Perry, who loaned the couple a house in Los Angeles when they first moved to the US.
They later asked him to be Lilibet’s godfather, Mr Perry revealed in their Netflix series last December, adding he would agree only if he did not have to go to the UK. He flew in for the event from his home in Atlanta on his private jet.
It was later reported that Harry’s aunts Lady Jane Fellowes and Lady Sarah McCorquodale, the sisters of the late Princess Diana, were also present.
