Number of retired civil servants with pensions of more than £100,000 doubles in a year as 141 mandarins receive six-figure retirement incomes
- Figures were released by the Cabinet Office under freedom of information laws
- The number of officials whose pension exceeds £50,000 has increased by half
The number of retired civil servants with annual pensions of more than £100,000 has doubled in a year.
A total of 141 mandarins receive six-figure retirement incomes, up from 71 the previous year, official figures show.
The number is almost four times the 38 civil servants who received pensions in excess of £100,000 in 2015.
The figures, released by the Cabinet Office under freedom of information laws, also show the number of officials whose pension exceeds £50,000 a year has increased by more than a half. It is up from nearly 3,100 last year to more than 4,700 in 2023.
Angus Hanton of the Intergenerational Foundation charity, which obtained the figures, said: ‘These pension payments are astonishing and highlight the unfairness towards younger people.

‘High income taxes leave them paying through the nose for extremely generous pensions which are far higher than millennials will ever get.
‘Baby boomers have made lavish promises on the cheque books of the younger generation.
‘These pensions are just one case of the older generation living not just beyond its means but beyond the means of its children.’
John O’Connell of the TaxPayers’ Alliance said: ‘Households feeling the pinch will be shocked at the growth of these pension pots.’
The data also shows that the number of retired civil servants to receive in excess of £33,000 a year has more than doubled since 2015 – up from 12,900 mandarins eight years ago, to 25,942 this year.
It comes as research this week found that the civil service has grown by almost a quarter in recent years.
