Couple left homeless by vigilante paedo hunters fuelled by false accusations

A couple have revealed they were left homeless after they were driven out by vigilante paedophile hunters who wrongly targeted them following false accusations.

Shona and David McLean have been forced to live in three hotels, two flats and the homes of two family members since February after a mob of around 300 targeted their home in Dumbarton, just outside of Glasgow.

The mob, who smashed their windows and set off fireworks outside their property, began gathering outside their home after a fake social media post made several false allegations against David.

Ten have since been arrested and charged with "mobbing and rioting" following the incident, which was live-streamed online.

Shonatold the BBCthat the situation escalated really quickly, with the mob swelling in numbers by the time police arrived.

"It was horrific. They were trying to kick the door in and all I could hear were the chants saying 'David, you're a filthy beast.'

"I can't imagine anything scarier than having 300 people trying to evict you from your home, believing they're judge and jury. Not one of them is."

“I'm very lucky that I keep my door locked anyway, otherwise they would have been in the house."

After police managed to slip the couple, who agreed to be named but not photographed, out of their home in a riot van, they were targeted as they stayed at one of David’s parent’s houses.

She said that both mobs were inflamed by fake social media posts about David, despite the fact that she spoke to police about the allegations, who confirmed her partner had no sex offence convictions.

The couple said they have been unable to return to their home, with the property being boarded up.

On top of this, the pair have had to give up their belongings and pets.

Shona said that social media platforms need to take responsibility for removing posts with damaging and unfounded allegations, as they could encourage similar vigilante action.

"This isn't going to go away, I don't feel as though it is. There is nothing I can do to prevent this from happening again.

"And it's not just me – it's happening to lots of people out there."
