Dad of Sabina Nessa’s sadistic killer blasts son’s brutal attack and asks: ‘How could he?’

THE dad of Sabina Nessa’s murderer has slammed his son’s actions – and said his victim “did not deserve this”.

Devastated Bashkim Selamaj, 73, revealed he is “so sad” for the primary school teacher, 28.

It comes after his son Koci Selamaj, 36, admitted randomly killing Sabina in a “sadistic”, sexually-motivated attack as she walked alone through a park.

The monster hid in a bush before chasing her down and knocking her unconscious after bludgeoning her 34 times with a steel traffic sign.

Sabina’s senseless slaying sparked further concern for women’s safety – coming just six months after the murder of Sarah Everard, 33.

Shocked Bashkim told The Sun: “How could he hit a person he didn’t know at all 34 times? We are shocked to learn that and we still cannot believe our son was involved in such a killing.

“Sabina was a human being and this lady did not deserve this death.

“I have two daughters and I am so sad about all this.”

Selamaj was raised on a poverty-stricken estate in Elbasan, 25 miles from Tirana, born into a poor but hardworking family during the country’s Communist regime.

Bashkim, 73, was a builder and mum Tefta, 70, a farmer.

A class photo of Selamaj aged around six at the Naim Frasheri primary school show him grinning innocently for the camera – a far cry from the woman-hating monster he went on to become.

School reports show he produced poor grades and later began bunking off lessons.

One of four children, he and his family moved to Athens, Greece, when he was 12.

He worked in a bakery and as a carpenter while just a boy, quitting school aged 16.

BRUTAL KILLING

Bashkim said: “Koci was a very quiet, good boy who wouldn’t kill a fly. We had no problems with him as a boy.

“Koci used to play normal games with the other children outside our apartment.

“When we moved to Greece, he just wanted to get employed to make money to help our family. He had no particular interests – he just wanted to earn money. He started working aged 13.”

Bashkim said Selamaj returned to Albania in 2015 and then travelled to the UK two years later.

It is believed he may have had Greek citizenship which he used to get to Britain, where he stayed with cousins, before marrying Romanian Ionela in 2018.

It is thought she had settled status here and Selamaj had gained a five-year spouse visa with a view to applying for indefinite leave to remain – however Bashkim was unsure exactly how he got here.

But their marriage broke down last summer – and Selamaj strangled her at least twice, the Old Bailey heard on Friday.

Selamaj is now facing life behind bars with a minimum of 30 years for Sabina's brutal murder.

He drove 70 miles from his home in Eastbourne, East Sussex, to attack “a lone woman” in Cator Park, Kidbrooke, South East London.

Selamaj then stayed at Eastbourne's Grand Hotel, where Ionela was a chambermaid, before going to work the next day.
