Dominic Raab faces calls to resign after ‘sea closure’ stopped paddleboarding

Workshy Dominic Raab is facing new calls to resign after he said a “sea closure” stopped him paddleboarding as Kabul fell.

The Foreign Secretary said reports he was enjoying a sun-kissed beach in Crete when the Taliban swept back to power were “nonsense”.

He was speaking for the first time on camera since being accused of refusing to take a call with an Afghan minister while at a five-star resort.

Mr Raab insisted: “We were focused overwhelmingly on securing the airport and making sure I was engaged in meetings.

“That stuff about me lounging around on the beach or stuff about me paddleboarding – nonsense. The sea was actually closed, it was a red notice.”

His claim sparked outrage last night, with one Twitter user writing: “‘The sea was closed.’ F*** me. I’ve never heard anything so ludicrous in my life. A pathetic excuse from a pathetic excuse for a man. #resign.”

Mr Raab faced huge pressure from opposition parties to quit last week when he claimed “no-one saw” the Taliban takeover coming – despite months of warnings from military experts.

He also claimed the speed of the Taliban takeover was faster than “anyone had predicted, including probably the Taliban”.

The minister yesterday refused to say whether the UK would send troops back in amid reports of Taliban brutality.

He faces a Commons grilling next Wednesday before an extraordinary session of the Foreign Affairs Committee.

The British evacuation operation has now taken 11,474 people out of Kabul since it began on Friday, August 13.
