Donald Trump isn't coming to Britain because he doesn't want to distract Theresa May from Brexit, says close ally

DONALD Trump isn't coming to visit Britain because he doesn't want to distract Theresa May from Brexit, a close ally of his has said.

Rex Tillerson said the US President didn't want to get in the way of the UK's important task of exiting the European Union.

Last week Trump said he's cancelled his trip to open the new US embassy next month – citing concerns over selling the building for "peanuts" in a "bad deal".

A state visit for him is still on the cards, but there are no details of exactly when this will be yet.

Today the Secretary of State Mr Tillerson told reporters: "As you know, President Trump was supportive of the U.K.’s exit from the EU, he still thinks that was the right decision for them.

"Britain needs to focus on those Brexit negotiations right now, which is really important to them, and I think the president realises that’s where Prime Minister May really needs to focus her attention."

The visit is set to be hit with widespread protests when it happens.

Activists hailed it as a victory and said he "wasn't welcome" in the UK.

And it was claimed last weekend that Trump cancelled his trip because he thought he "wasn't loved enough" by Theresa May's Government.

A US source said using the embassy's location was "just an excuse" to scrap the trip, which was in the diary for February 26 and 27.

"He felt he had not been shown enough love by the British government," the source said.

"He started to believe that the British government thought the same way about him as Sadiq Khan [the mayor of London] and Jeremy Corbyn [the Labour leader], who have made clear their disdain for him and said he is not welcome in the UK."

The paper also said that No10 officials were in the advanced stage of planning a trip that could have included lunch at Buckingham Palace.

Tillerson has said he hopes to visit the embassy during his visit to London next week.
