Former President Donald Trump appears to be meddling in the 2024 elections. Far from his political career being over, Mr Trump seems intent on ousting his former opponent to secure the Presidency for himself once again. His recent actions have been labelled by some as “very dangerous”. Should President Biden be concerned?

Recent endorsements for the regional US elections in 2022, by Former President Donald Trump, have alarmed independent election experts and Democrats.

Mr Trump continues to back the key figures who tried to undermine the elections in 2020.

He has endorsed the campaigns of the Republicans who supported his misinformation about voter fraud.

Mr Trump claimed his lack of votes was down to widespread electoral fraud – these claims were later disproved.

If Mr Trump’s candidates are successful, they could be put in charge of running the 2024 elections.

Professor Rick Hasen told CNN: “It is incredibly dangerous to support people for office who do not accept the legitimacy of the 2020 election.

“It suggests that they might be willing to bend or break the rules when it comes to running elections and counting votes in the future,”

He added: “Someone who claims falsely that the 2020 election was stolen from Trump lacks credibility and cannot be trusted to run a fair election.”

The latest in a series of worrying endorsement’s by Mr Trump is his backing of state Rep. Mark Finchem for Arizona secretary of state.

Mr Finchem has always maintained that last year’s election was “stolen” from Mr Trump due to voter fraud.

He attended the “Stop the Steal” really in Washington on January 6, which lead to riots and the storming of the US Capitol.

In a statement announcing his endorsement, Mr Trump praised Mr Finchem’s “incredibly powerful stance on the Voter Fraud that took place in the 2020 Presidential Election Scam”.

In 2022 there will be elections for secretary of state in 26 states.

So far, Mr Trump has endorsed candidates for three of these states, who promoted his “Big Lie” about last year’s elections.

His endorsements have sparked concern, as many of these secretaries have power over key election processes.

While a secretary’s power varies from state to state, many have power over critical election processes such as:

  • Who gets sent a mail-in ballot application
  • Which names are deleted from the registration rolls
  • The number of ballot drop boxes allowed
  • The voting technology used in the election
  • The certification of the results.

Jena Griswold Secretary of State for Colorado told CNN if “anti-democracy” figures are elected they could pose as an “insider threat” to election security.

She insisted state election chiefs needed to “believe in democracy and believe in facts”.
