Melbourne will experience a colder-than-average midweek, but the chilly weather won’t last, with a glorious weekend ahead for those keen to head to the beach.
Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Michael Efron says to expect a drop in temperature and gusty winds for much of Melbourne on Wednesday.

“We’re only expecting 18 degrees. That’s about eight degrees below average,” he told The Age.
Southerly winds from Tasmania are to blame. But the cooler weather will bring with it some additional relief for those who’ve been sweating through the recent run of humid nights and early mornings.
“Those uncomfortable nights won’t be making an appearance I think until maybe Sunday night into Monday,” Efron said.
Conditions will warm up after Wednesday, and the weekend will be ideal for beachgoers, according to the meteorologist.
“There will be plenty of sunshine.”
Temperatures are expected to hit 26 degrees on Friday, with Saturday due to be 29 degrees. Sunday could reach a top of 31.
“So we’ll return to beach weather as we head to the weekend. And it doesn’t look as humid as much more pleasant. Not too hot, not too windy either. So pretty good conditions for the weekend,” Efron said.
This week’s cool change comes after large hailstones lashed central Victoria and temperatures soared into the 40s in the state’s northwest.
On Monday, temperatures in parts of Melbourne fell by 10 degrees in 20 minutes when an afternoon cool change arrived.
Meanwhile, Mildura reached a top of 41 degrees – the hottest temperature recorded in the state – as the Mallee region experienced a total fire ban. The total fire ban was lifted by Tuesday, but the fire risk remained high in the Mallee, Wimmera and Northern Country.
