Dozens of firefighters battle tower block blaze: Inferno tears through flat on 20th floor of 21-storey building in southwest London

Emergency crews are tackling a fire that has broken out on the 20th floor of a tower block in Southwest London.

Firefighters raced to the scene at Westbridge Road in Battersea this evening receiving reports of a huge blaze.

Crews say the fire is confined to three-bedroom flat, with almost 80 per cent of the property on fire. 

Station Commander Pete Johnson, who is at the scene, said: ‘Crews were faced with a lot of smoke issuing from the top of a block of flats on arrival.

‘There was also lots of visible flame which has prompted a high number of calls to our Control Officers.

‘Firefighters are working hard to bring the fire under control. There are a number of road closures in place.’

The London Fire Brigade tweeted: ‘Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to reports of a fire at a block of flats on Westbridge Road in Battersea. More information to follow.’
