Energy customer pleads for help with how to read his electric meter – can YOU work it out?

AN energy customer was left stumped when they went to take their electric meter reading – and were faced with a number of baffling dials.

After spending an hour scrawling through instructions, Reddit user @whytebunny reached out on social media, leaving many others scratching their heads.

Posting a photo of the six dials online, @whytebunny, wrote: "Weird post, I know, but Brits please help: How do you read this electric meter?

"We've looked at instructions for one hour and we're still confused."

One helpful user replied: "The trick is to treat each dial like the hand on a clock (annoyingly though some are going anti clockwise but it's the same thing) so you only care about the last digit the hand has passed."

They went on to explain: "So the first one is at zero. Second passes zero.

"Third is VERY close to seven but not quite so it's six.

"Fourth is VERY close to zero but not quite so it's nine. Fifth is VERY close to nine but not quite so it's eight.

"Then you have the 0-1 which is the decimal point so that's seven (it's the smallest division so you'll need to round this one to the nearest half-digit as you can't get it any more accurate)."

The helpful user said the final reading was 698.70 kWh, before adding: "This makes sense as we can see from the 100 hand it is just below the seven, so the final result should be just under 700kWh."

Someone else added: "The reading really is 00698.7. Super pedantic but just to match the numbers with the dials."

Meanwhile EDF Energy advises customers to "ignore the last dial on the right".

The provider says electric dial meters should be read from left to right.

It explains that if the pointer is between two numbers, customers should take the lower number for their reading.

And if the pointer is directly over a number, they should write that one down.

If the pointer falls between nine and zero, customers should write down nine and reduce the reading they've already taken for the dial on it's left by one.

By this advice, the meter reading posted on Reddit would appear to show: 00698.

How to read an electric dial meter

To read an electric dial meter correctly:

  • Read the dials from left to right
  • If the pointer is between the two numbers, always take the lower number
  • If the pointer is directly over a number, write down that one
  • If the pointer falls between 9 and 0, write down 9 and reduce the reading you've already taken for the dial on it's left by one. For example, if you originally recorded 5, reduce it to 4
  • Don't read the last dial on the right
