President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has urged Vladimir Putin to stop his war in Ukraine hours after China announced its 12-point peace plan. The Turkish Premier spoke to both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy on the first anniversary of the war in Ukraine. The Directorate for Communications of the President said the conversation with Vladimir Putin concerned the devastating earthquakes that struck Turkey earlier this month and “developments regarding the Russia-Ukraine war”.

The directorate added: “President Erdogan stressed the need for achieving a just peace to prevent further loss of life and destruction.” President Erdogan re-emphasised how Turkey was ready to provide the facilities needed for future peace talks between the two countries to end the conflict. President Erdogan’s conversation with Putin comes hours after China unveiled its 12-point plan for peace as the country calls for ceasefire and peace talks. President Xi Jinping was expected to deliver a “peace speech” on Friday to mark the war’s first anniversary.
