Good news: Democratic mayoral nominee Eric Adams knows who his real enemies are — and that they’re already gunning for him. It’s not Republicans or even most of his recent Democratic rivals: It’s the far left, and particularly the Democratic Socialists of America.
He’s trying to save New York City (and show the way for all urban America). They are the “chief obstacle” in turning the city around.
At a Queens fundraiser Monday night, Adams warned the DSA doesn’t want to see him succeed, so he’s now “running against a movement.”
“All across the country, the DSA socialists are mobilizing to stop Eric Adams,” he said. “They realize if I’m successful, we’re going to start the process of regaining control of our cities.”
They’re the ones pushing ever-crazier legislation like the no-bail law, tax hikes that would send the rest of New York’s tax base fleeing for the tax-free beaches of Florida and mad schemes for vastly more public housing even as the New York City Housing Authority is trying to save its complexes and fund desperately needed repairs by shifting to private management under an Obama program.
They also don’t want Adams, a former cop, to succeed because his pragmatism defies their extremist visions, such as slashing the NYPD budget in half.
Indeed, the DSA is mainly aiming to oust Democratic officeholders, as did Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and several others who won state Senate seats last year. The strategy is to take out the centrists and liberals first: They’re the easiest targets.
The question now is how many other Democrats across New York will join Adams to save their own party.
