Exploding extinguisher kills student and injures five others during school fire drill

  • A CO2 canister blew up today at the Rajavinit Mathayom School in Bangkok

A fire extinguisher exploded at a prestigious school in Bangkok today killing one student and injuring five others.

The horrific blast occurred as a carbon dioxide canister blew up when classmates at the Rajavinit Mathayom School took part in a fire drill at around 11 am.

The injured were carried off on stretchers to be treated by emergency services as shocked officials huddled together to discuss the incident.

The area was cordoned off, with items from the classroom strewn across the school yard and school bags tragically left outside. 

The local rescue team believe that a ‘technical difficulty’ occurred when people used the extinguisher.

It may have become defective from sun or heat exposure, said Anyawut Phoampai of the Ruam Katanyu Foundation, one of Thailand’s biggest rescue organisations, who confirmed the death and injuries.

Officials said they were investigating who organised the fire drill and the cause of the explosion.

The school has closed its gates as forensics officers collect evidence from the scene. 

Police said investigations are ongoing.
