Farmer, 78, crushed to death moving 74st Aga cooker in his kitchen

A FARMER was crushed to death moving a 74st Aga in his kitchen.

Grandad Tony Rees, 78, had the cooker and oven on a small wheel trolley when it overturned and pinned him to the floor.

Wife Beth and neighbours made frantic attempts to save him but he could not be resuscitated. He died of “crush injuries to the chest”.

Mrs Rees, a former Denbighshire county councillor, said: “I have lost my wonderful husband and soulmate of 53 years.

“I tried desperately to save him but to no avail.

“I couldn’t have wished to have had a better man with whom to share my life.”

Tony had told Beth that he “wanted to get the job done” when she asked for the cooker to be moved, an inquest heard.

The horrific accident happened on June 8 at the family farm in Llanbedr-Dyffryn-Clwyd, North Wales, where they raised prized Welsh Black cows.

No funeral was held but Beth explained: “He had already chosen his spot. We drove him in the back of his Range Rover through the farm and across the fields for his final journey.

“My grandchildren will be planting an oak tree to mark grandad’s spot. I’m overwhelmed and deeply touched by all the messages, cards and letters I have received.”

North East Wales coroner John Gittins adjourned the hearing to a later date.
