The UK has been put under a storm alert as the nation is set to be hit by a deluge of rain with the heatwave crashing to an end this week.
On Friday, the country will be swept away by high winds and lightning as the rain pummels into drains and roofs in a break in weather during the country’s hottest month.
Alongside the wet weather, the wind will be gusting at speeds of up to 36mph, which has the potential to cause chaos.
Ahead of the meteorological onslaught, there are fears about how the nation will cope.

Speaking exclusively to the Express, British Weather Services’ Jim Dale said: “We’re cut off. Ourselves, Ireland, and Scandinavia are in a block of our own, a northwest block dominated by low pressure and it’s that low pressure that will prevent any of the serious heat from getting in our direction but give us heavy showers and stronger winds.
“Humidity will be high. Sea temperatures around are high and in which case there is eery chance of deep developments occurring.”
Met Office Meteorologist and Presenter Alex Deakin added: “What we’re seeing with the jet steam is this shift more towards being directed towards the UK from the southwest, which is helping to push low-pressure systems towards the UK.
“Ahead of the weekend, the jet steam is looking to be relatively strong and, as well as bringing a period of some more persistent rain for many, it’s also bringing some strong winds and continuing this fresh period of weather.”
Charts also show a further storm sweeping over Britain on Saturday and into the early hours of Sunday. Almost all of Britain is likely to be hit by rain and strong winds with gales arriving from the Atlantic to South West England before heading east and north.
Maps pinpoint the swirling mass currently in the North Atlantic.
This isn’t the first time the UK has been hit by weather warnings as 2023 continues to be a year of dramatic weather events. Earlier this month, there was major flooding in parts of the UK, causing residents to leave their cars abandoned in rising waters.
Pictures from Preston showed submerged cars at the bottom of the hill and drivers pushing through flood waters. Lancashire was among the worst affected areas over the weekend.
A spokesperson for Lancashire County Council said teams had been sent to unblock drains hindering the dispersal of water. They warned: “We’re currently dealing with a flooding incident along the A49 Wigan Road in Euxton, Chorley, following today’s thunderstorms.
“The road is closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area. A gully wagon is on the scene & we hope to open the road up later this evening.”
An hour and a half later the road was reopened, but it was just one of many examples of drains being overwhelmed by brief but intense spells of wet weather.

Not everyone was put off by the flooding in urban areas.
A video posted on Reddit showed a pub-goer carrying two glasses of beer through a flooded pub in Birmingham.
The footage also shows other punters apparently unbothered by the water rising around them.
It left fellow Reddit users bemused by how calm the pubgoers were by the damp conditions inside the venue.
One user wrote: “What an amazing feat of human achievement. Next-level stuff, for sure.”
Another said: “Standing in the water, drinking beer, listening to Tiffany. Dream bar.”
