Finnish PM Sanna Marin announces her divorce one month after losing election

Russia ‘should leave Ukraine’ says Sanna Marin

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin has announced she is divorcing her husband Markus Raikkonen after 19 years together. The couple, who share a daughter, had been in a relationship since they were 18 and made the announcement on Instagram. The Finnish PM wrote: “Together we’ve filed for divorce. We’re grateful for the 19 years together and for our beloved daughter.

“We’re still best friends, close to each other and loving parents. Going forward we will still spend time together as a family and with each other.

“We wish you will respect our privacy. We won’t comment further on this.”

Last month, the Finnish leader lost the election to the country’s main conservative party in a tight three-way race that saw right-wing populists take second place.

The results sparked worries in the EU over far-right party The Finns’s infamous anti-EU sentiments.

The centre-right National Coalition Party (NCP) claimed victory with all of the votes counted, coming out on top at 20.8 percent. They were followed by right-wing populist party The Finns with 20.1 percent, while the Social Democrats garnered 19.9 percent.

Over 2,400 candidates from 22 parties were vying for the 200 seats in the Nordic country’s parliament.

NCP leader Petteri Orpo said: “Based on this result, talks over forming a new government to Finland will be initiated under the leadership of the National Coalition Party.”

Marin, who at age 37 is one of Europe’s youngest leaders, has received international praise for her vocal support of Ukraine and her prominent role, along with President Sauli Niinistö, in advocating for Finland’s successful application to join NATO.

Before the elections, she was forced to apologise and take a drug test after a private video of her dancing with her friends at a party was released to the public.

At the time, Marin said: “I’m disappointed that it has become public. I spent the evening with friends. Partied, pretty wild, yes. Danced and sang.”

She added: “None of the prime minister’s duties have been left unfulfilled because I spent the evening with my friends.

“Everyone needs a fun and relaxed night out.”

The drug test she took resulted negative, exonerating her from accusations of alleged illegal activities at the party.

The incident sparked a debate about her right to a private life as Marin said she “resents [the footage] became known to the public” after the video was filmed in a private space.
