Fire breaks out at Royal Gwent Hospital as patients are urgently evacuated and emergency services race to the scene | The Sun

A FIRE has broken out at a busy Welsh hospital, prompting an urgent evacuation.

Emergency services rushed to the scene to get the blaze under control at the Royal Gwent Hospital's outpatient department in Newport, South Wales.

All appointments in the department were cancelled this morning but have since resumed.

The health board confirmed that all inpatients and staff are safe.

In a statement released on Twitter this morning, Aneurin Bevan University Health Board wrote: "We are currently dealing with a fire at the Royal Gwent Hospital Outpatients Department.

"The department has been evacuated and the South Wales Fire and Rescue service are on scene. All outpatient appointments have been cancelled for today and all inpatients and staff are safe."

The board later confirmed that firefighters had left the building and the site was now secured.

The rest of the hospital is operating as normal.

All patients who have had their appointments cancelled or changed will be directly contacted.

A later tweet from the board informed patients that appointments would resume from 11am and anyone scheduled to see a doctor after that time should still turn up.

They also wrote: "Thank you for everyone’s co-operation and to our staff and the South Wales Fire and Rescue Service for their quick response."

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been contacted for comment.
