The shooting that led to Devin’s death was the latest in a stream of violence that has plagued Chicago this summer.

Four teenagers were wounded in an Aug. 24 drive-by shooting outside an ice cream shop near Carl Schurz High School on the city’s Northwest Side.

CBS News named Chicago, which has a murder rate 18.26 per 100,000 citizens, the 28th deadliest city in America earlier this year.

Violent crimes are still up across the board in Chicago

The Chicago Police Department reported 425 homicides as of Aug. 22, down from 519 for the same period last year, and 1,828 shooting incidents, compared to 2,239 during the same period in 2021.

Overall crime in Chicago has surged since last year by 35 percent despite shooting incidents lowering by 16 percent.

Robberies are up by 20 percent in Chicago from 2021. Violent crimes are still up across the board, especially since before the start of the pandemic – less than a year after Lightfoot was sworn into office in May 2019.

Robberies are up by 20 percent in the Windy City

Violent assaults are also up, with 2,553 cases of aggravated battery having been reported already this year. During June 2021, the city had recorded 2,516 cases.

Sexual assaults and rapes are down this year, with the city recording nine fewer incidents this year than this time in 2021.

Small crimes such as theft have also surged since last year, by a whopping 65 percent, from 4,712 incidents to 7,770.

Gun violence, meanwhile – arguably the city’s most pressing and prevailing issue – trickled down slightly, from 1,381 shootings last year to 1,148 so far in 2022.
