Flags on Colorado state buildings and properties have been lowered to half-staff to honor former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, who died on Wednesday in Washington. She was 84.
Born in Czechoslovakia in 1937, she was forced to flee by the Nazi occupation and spent much of World War II in England before moving to the United States in 1948 and living in Denver as a teenager.
Gov. Jared Polis ordered flags to half-staff in tribute to Secretary Albright.
“Today, we mourn the loss of a true pioneer and history-maker with proud, deep roots in Colorado where her family moved when she was a young girl,” Polis said in a statement. “Coloradans, Americans, and people around the world will be indebted to her service. Secretary Albright went on to serve as the first female U.S. Secretary of State, carrying with her a legacy of firsts. My heart goes out to former Secretary Albright’s loved ones and the international community, where her life continues to teach our nation and the world lessons of determination, wisdom, and grace in times of peace or unrest.”
Albright’s father, Joseph Korbel was the University of Denver’s first school of international studies dean. She served as secretary of state under President Bill Clinton.
Flags at half-staff under the governor’s order will return to full staff at sunset on Sunday, March 27.
