Footage shows moment heroes save drowning man from sea after he went missing underwater on Dorset coast

A MAN drowning in the sea was rescued by nearby swimmers after his group shouted for help.

The dramatic moment was captured on video as rescuers dragged the man onto the beach after he was paddled to shore with a bodyboard.

Shocked onlookers watched as the man disappeared under the water at Southbourne beach, near Portman Ravine, several times as rescuers paddled towards him as fast as they could.

The exhausted man was dragged to the shore holding on to a body board before being carried up the beach.

He then collapsed and vomited before the ambulance crew arrived.

When lifeguards arrived they covered the rescuers in towels and blankets while they waited for the ambulance.

The shocking incident took place on Southbourne beach, near Portman Ravine, at about 4pm on Sunday.

A group of men were swimming around 30 metres from the shore when they started struggling and called out for help.

Richard Crump was swimming nearby with his wife and son when he heard the calls for help.

He paddled out with his son's body board to try and help.

Mr Crump told the Daily Echo: “I heard a cry for help and I could see the men were clearly out of their depth.”

“I grabbed my goggles and my son’s body board and paddled out to the nearest chap.”

“He kept going under the water and I was just hoping I would get to him on time.”

Thankfully, Mr Crump is an experienced sea swimmer, got to him and told him to grab onto his body board.

He said: “Luckily he had enough of his senses left to hold on tight.”

“Another man helped me get him on to the beach.”

The man was then carried up to the beach and placed on the sand.

Mr Crump said at first he thought the man was fine after saying a couple of words, but then “became very unresponsive.”

Lifeguards then arrived and rescued other people from the water.

Mr Crump said the incident should serve as a warning to the public, saying things could have ended “very different.”

He said: “I think people need to realise the sea at Southbourne is not as safe as it looks.”
