One man was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham while two other adults were taken to Hereford County Hospital, West Mercia Police said.

A fourth person was treated by paramedics on Tuesday evening, according to the force last night.

A uniformed officer remains at the scene of the house blast this morning, which left three people needing treatment in hospital. A fourth was treated by paramedics at the scene

Some 10 neighbouring properties were evacuated and a police cordon remains in place while officers respond to the incident.

People have been asked to stay away from the area and a road closure is in effect at the scene.

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: ‘Four people have been injured following a suspected gas explosion in Evesham this evening.

‘Emergency services were called to the incident on Hemmingway shortly at 5pm. Five neighbouring properties have been evacuated as a precaution.’

The property was razed to the ground by the blast, which destroyed its roof and crumbled walls.

The force of the explosion startled neighbours living nearby. Sandra Cox, who lives close to the home that was destroyed, described hearing an ‘almighty bang’ which shook her home.

‘We were just sitting in the lounge, playing with the children and having a good time, when all of a sudden… there was an almighty bang,’ the former nurse told BBC News.

‘[It] frightened the life out of all of us. It shook the house, it was horrible,’ she added.

The aftermath of the blast shows how the terraced home’s roof completely collapsed from the force of the suspected gas explosion

Emergency services rushed to the scene, with police, paramedics and firefighters all involved in the rescue effort to save survivors.

The cause of the incident has not yet been officially confirmed.

It comes after a pensioner injured in an explosion at a block of flats in Jersey earlier this month died in hospital on Christmas Day, becoming the 10th victim of the tragedy.

The blast, which took place just after 4am on December 10, destroyed the building in St Helier. It levelled the three-storey building and rocked the island community.

Kathleen McGinness, aged 73, was taken to hospital after the incident at Pier Road. She had lived in an adjacent building to the one that collapsed, police said.

Seven of the victims had already been named as Peter Bowler, 72, Raymond ‘Raymie’ Brown, 71, Romeu and Louise De Almeida, 67 and 64, Derek and Sylvia Ellis, 61 and 73, and 63-year-old Billy Marsden.

Investigators are still probing the cause of the explosion which rocked the Channel island community.
