Fury over 1000-strong illegal ‘Coronation’ rave in North Yorkshire village after partygoers were spotted ‘drug-driving’ and using roadside as a toilet – as police make nine arrests and seize music equipment

  • Officers said they received reports of loud music, drug use and disorder

Residents have been left fuming after nearly 1,000 people gathered for an illegal Coronation rave filled with loud music and disorder.

North Yorkshire Police arrested nine people, all men aged in their 20s and 30s, and seized several vans full of music equipment after attending the unlicensed event in a village between York and Selby on Saturday.

Officers said they received reports of loud music, drug use and disorder, while drones were also deployed to the scene.

Villagers in Stillingfleet said the event sounded ‘like Leeds Festival’ and they have been unable to sleep, with police also saying the event caused ‘huge distress and disruption’.

One resident, who wished to remain anonymous, was astonished by how sophisticated the illegal rave set-up was.

Around 1,000 people are said to have attended the illegal rave, travelling from as far as Brighton and London

She said: ‘They had stages, generators, vans, you name it.’

The woman also said she had spoken to people who had travelled from as far afield as London and Brighton to attend – all of whom learned about the rave via social media.

Those attending warned the event could go on until Tuesday.

Another resident claimed she witnessed drink and drug driving, adding: ‘It felt like Leeds Fest all over again! Genuinely did. I’m angry, and disappointed.

‘Worried about the people who are now driving home to god knows where under the influence of drugs/and or alcohol.

‘And worried this could so easily happen again. We are obviously a rural community, and of course whilst everybody hopes it won’t happen on their doorstep, we definitely never thought that kind of thing would happen here.’

There were also reports online of party-goers defecating on the roadside.

The concerned mother added: ‘It felt like Leeds Fest all over again! Genuinely did.

‘Events such as these cause huge distress and disruption to the local community, and also put attendees themselves at risk.

‘Significant number of officers are deploying to the scene, including police drone pilots.

‘Any illegal activity identified will be dealt with robustly. We’re grateful to local residents for their patience while we work to resolve this incident.’
