A George Mason basketball recruit and one of his high school teammates were arrested on Wednesday night after they allegedly killed a man during an attempted robbery last month, according to The Washington Post.
Cameron Walker, 17, and teammate Jonathan Murray, 18, were arrested by Alpharetta, Georgia, police on Wednesday night and charged with murder and criminal attempt to commit armed robbery, per the report.
Police said they killed former Kennesaw State student Connor Mediate in October. Mediate was found shot and unconscious at an apartment complex in Alpharetta, and was later declared dead on the scene, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He was 24.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Walker was planning to meet Mediate to purchase drugs. Both he and Murray “were intending on robbing” Mediate from the beginning, police said.
Both Walker and Murray attend Milton High School and played in their season-opener on Wednesday night before they were arrested, per the report. They are currently being held without bond in the Fulton County jail.
Walker, a guard, committed to George Mason on Nov. 10.
The university said in a statement Thursday that Walker “can no longer be considered for admission.”
“We are devastated that a young person in Georgia lost his life and we send our heartfelt condolences to his family,” the school said, via The Washington Post. “We take these matters with the utmost level of seriousness. Cameron Walker’s family has been notified that he can no longer be considered for admission into the George Mason University men’s basketball program.”
