Grandad claims car window was shot out by thug with air rifle as he drove his two-year-old granddaughter

A FUMING granddad claims his car's back windscreen was shot at with an air rifle while his two-year-old granddaughter was inside.

David Rood, 71, also had his wife in the car when he heard a sudden crack and the window shattered.

Mr Rood, a retired consultant from Southsea, Hampshire, believes someone shot at his car from a block of flats.

The situation could have been much more serious as his wife Reena, 51, was sitting in the back with their granddaughter Ayana, 2, who was in a car seat.

Mr Rood said he heard two objects hit his car within seconds of each other.

One ricocheted off the body work while the other caused the back window to smash.

He said: "I think I was actually lucky because, had the person been a bit more accurate, it would have come through the driver's window.

"The second one hit on the far side and, if it had been a bit lower, it would have gone into the passengers in the back."

Mr Rood now fears others in the neighbourhood could be at risk.

He said: "It was just such a shock as we were driving along and suddenly there was an explosion in the car, with glass everywhere.

"I could see where it had hit the car and bounced away. From the trajectory it looks like it come from an angle.

"I want to let people know that someone could be taking pot shots at vehicles and they need to be careful. It was very scary."

The shooting happened on Monday, January 30 at approximately 2.30pm while the family were driving round a roundabout in Fratton, Portsmouth.

A spokesman from Hampshire Constabulary said the incident was not being linked to any others and that the object that caused the window to smash was not known.

He added: "We received a report of a car suffering damage in Portsmouth.

"The vehicle, a Mercedes, was being driven along Victoria Road North, between the Fratton Bridge roundabout and Holbrook Road roundabout, when it was struck by an unknown object, causing the rear windscreen to smash.

"The incident took place at around 2.35pm on Monday, January 30.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information to assist, is asked to contact police."

Last month it was reported that a man fired an air rifle at a baby's head to "shut him up".

The shooting of tiny Harry Studley prompted calls for tighter laws around air rifle sales.
