Grandmother of stab 'murder' victim Lilia, 9, set fire to hotel with relatives inside on daughter's wedding night | The Sun

THE GRAN of Lillia Valutyte who was stabbed to death set fire to a hotel with her relatives inside on her daughter’s wedding night.

The nine-year-old who died earlier this month was playing with her little sister, five, outside a cafe where their mum was working when she was brutally attacked.

Fruit picker Deividas Skebas, 22, is charged with the brutal murder.

The Lithuanian national grew up in the tiny village of Leliūnai, around ten miles from the industrial city of Utena in north east Lithuania.

Now it has been revealed that little Lillia’s grandmother, Inga Papstaitiene, was found guilty of arson and sentenced to eight years in prison by a court in Lithuania in June.

It’s thought she started the blaze after a fight with her daughter, Lina Savicke, and her son-in-law Aurelijus Savickas.

A friend of Ms Savicke told The Telegraph: “Lina’s parents didn’t approve of the wedding to Aurelijus. Her own mother tried to kill Lina and her family. It was awful. And then to have your child killed in front of you … it’s impossible to believe. She has suffered so much.”

A court heard she deliberately started a fire in the first floor kitchen – but everyone inside the building escaped unhurt.

On the night of the wedding 11 people including her mother, daughter, and granddaughter were sleeping on the second floor.

But Papstaitiene denies arson and is planning to appeal against the sentence.

She told the Lithuanian Delfi Plius newspaper: “Lina’s wedding took place that evening. My son-in-law attacked me because of a complete misunderstanding. My mother then drank a little too much and arguments began.

“All the guests stayed there all night. Then the swearing started between us because they behaved badly with my mother. She had drunk too much, they didn’t like something and it started.”

She accused her daughter and son-law and of attacking her.

She added: “I remember they were dragging me on the ground, twisting my arms, and others were just laughing watching all this. They dragged me, the tendon of my arm broke. Then I ran to the fields.”

Papstaitiene is due to appeal against the sentence at a hearing on Sep 22.

Little Lilia was killed as she played with a hula hoop next to her five-year-old sister at around 6.20pm on July 28.

Her mum, who was working in a café when the tragedy unfolded, said she heard one of her daughter's scream "mum" at the time.

Lina, 35, told the Sunday Mirror: "On that fateful day I was giving a gift to my friend when the children were playing outside my windows.
