Greggs & Waitrose in running to provide BA meals after airline dumps M&S

GREGGS and Waitrose are in a dogfight to provide British Airways inflight meals after the airline axed its M&S deal.

Insiders dismissed rumours BA is to return to freebie meals on short-haul flights to distance their services from no-frills carriers.

Instead, the airline has decided to dump M&S for another “great British brand” — with Waitrose and Greggs said to be in the frame.

A source added: “BA pushed the boat out to get M&S on board, so it’s a big surprise to see them jettison the firm. And possibly a big risk.”

BA announced its agreement with M&S in 2016 following complaints about inflight food.

At the same time, it ended free economy-class meals on short-haul flights, instead selling a selection of the chain’s salads and sandwiches.

Low cost airlines such as easyJet and Ryanair sell small snacks.

But ex-BA boss Alex Cruz claimed his offering “set a new standard in short-haul catering”.

Yesterday BA said: “We’re off on a new flight path.

"We look forward to announcing our exciting new buy-on-board proposition with a great British brand that customers have told us they love.”

M&S said it was happy to walk away from the BA deal.

A spokesman said: “We are proud to have been a supplier to BA’s short-haul food service since 2017.

“Our partnership was always due to end this year and we have agreed not to renew. M&S Food continues to focus on developing its wider franchise partnerships.”
