Guests at a five-star resort in Cancun, Mexico are currently sheltering in place amid reports of an "active shooter" scenario with witnesses claiming to have heard the sound of a "machine gun".

Armed gunmen have reportedly stormed the beach at the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun on Thursday afternoon with reports of shots having been fired.

Reports coming out of Mexico indicate that paramedics have now arrived at the scene, but no information has been released regarding casualties.

Terrified hotel guests have tweeted about being instructed to "duck" and shelter in hiding places along with hotel employees as they wait for news about what's happening outside.

A Spanish-speaking user claims there seems to have been an "attack in the main pool with people entering from the beach".

An American man says he's currently hiding with seven others and heard shots that "sounded like a machine gun".

"Haven’t been given any updates but did see paramedics run by," he said. "We are still hiding in place."

Another posted footage from inside the hotel itself, writing: "All guests and employees told to duck, and we’re all taken to hiding places at Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun Resort.

"Active shooter? Terrorist or kidnapping threat? They’re not telling us anything."

The clip shows hotel workers sitting and standing along the walls of a darkened hallway, presumably within the resort.

American publicist Andrew Krop says his husband is currently holed up inside the hotel along with several others, and that he has been in touch with the US Embassy.

He has since told the Daily Star he has been able to contact his husband who is still inside the resort.

The US Embassy in Mexico told Reuters it is looking into reports of a shooting.

The hotel has yet to issue any official statement regarding the unfolding situation.

Just a couple of hours before the incident, the Hyatt Ziva Riviera Cancun's official Twitter account posted an image of an interior part of the hotel along with the caption: "Miles beyond ordinary."
