Harrowing pictures show bloodied Ukrainians fleeing burning apartment block as Putin blitzes Kyiv ahead of new assault

HARROWING pictures show bloodied Ukrainians being pulled from a burning apartment block in Kyiv.

The Ukrainian capital has been pounded by Vladimir Putin’s forces ahead of a widely anticipated assault on the city.

Putin's troops are inching closer and are believed to be just 15 miles from the city as terrified Ukrainians continue to flee their homes.

Fighting has been continuing on the outskirts of Kyiv and several of its suburbs were hit by shell fire overnight.

Russian fire also hit a nine-story apartment building in a northern district of the city, killing two more people, authorities said.

Firefighters worked to rescue survivors, painstakingly carrying an injured woman on a stretcher away from the blackened and still smoking building.

One died in the Antonov factory itself while another was killed when bombs hit nearby apartment blocks, setting them on fire.

A town councillor for Brovary, east of Kyiv, was killed in fighting there, officials said.

Russian forces were last week ambushed there as they tried to advance on the capital, with drone footage showing tanks being burning on the road after being obliterated by the Ukrainians.

Shells also fell on the Kyiv suburbs of Irpin, Bucha and Hostomel, which have seen some of the worst fighting in Russia’s stalled attempt to take the capital.

Russia is now trying to attack Kyiv from two sides in an attempt to surround the city.

  • Bits joined Ukrainian troops in World War One-style trenches with one wielding a Soviet-made World War Two machine gun.

Putin's forces are thought to be approaching from the northeastern and northwestern borders ahead of a potentially large and bloody battle, Ukraine's armed forces revealed.

They have already seized parts of north-western suburban towns with vehicles and infantry, setting up checkpoints.

Civilians have been fleeing to Kiev from fierce battles with Putin’s troops accused of gunning down fleeing women and children.

Russia was accused of killing seven people – including a child – who were making a last-ditch attempt to flee the warzone at the weekend.

Ukraine's intelligence service said Russian troops fired at a convoy of civilian evacuees from the village of Peremoha in the Kyiv region.

They said in a statement: "After the attack, the occupiers forced the remnants of the column to turn back to Peremoha and are not letting them out of the village.

"Russians shot a column of women and children while trying to evacuate from the village of Peremoha in the Kyiv region along an agreed 'green' corridor. Seven people died, including one child."
