Taking it easy Harry? Manchester United star Maguire relaxes on Portugal holiday with Peter Crouch and friends – three years after Mykonos sunshine break went wild when he was convicted of attacking police

Out-of-favour football star Harry Maguire put concerns about his future at Manchester United behind him to enjoy a sunshine holiday in Portugal with his family and friends.

The 30-year-old has been undergoing intensive training at a top specialist soccer camp in the Algarve run by legendary defender Ricardo Carvalho to prepare for next season.

The England defender’s trip to Europe amid a blistering heatwave comes three years after a sunshine break on the Greek island of Mykonos with eight family members and friends turned ugly when he was convicted of assault and attempted bribery.

Maguire was handed a suspended jail sentence of 21 months and 10 days by a court on the island of Syros after he was found guilty of assaulting police, resisting arrest and attempted bribery.

His brother Joe and friend Christopher Sharman were both sentenced to 13 months, also suspended for three years.

Maguire launched an appeal which automatically led to the conviction being quashed and a retrial at a higher court. He cannot receive a more severe punishment if found guilty again.

The defender’s hearing was delayed by the pandemic and was then due to take place in June before Maguire’s legal team asked for it to be put back once more.

It has now been rescheduled for February 7, although Maguire is not expected to appear in person.

Despite the retrial looming and speculation mounting about his future, Maguire was in good spirits as he relaxed with friends at a beach bar at the exclusive Quinta do Lago Algarve resort.

He sank pints of beer and chatted with friends – including former England striker Peter Crouch – as he soaked up the sun with his wife Fern and other family members.

In November, the defender said he had ‘no regrets’ about the clash with police.

His reputation took a hammering after the events of August 21, 2020, when he was holidaying with a group including his now wife Fern Hawkins, 28, his sister, Daisy, 24, and his brother Joe, 26, at a £29,000-a-week villa in Mykonos.

After spending the day drinking at a beach club, they went to Mykonos town centre to the exclusive Bonbonniere bar, reportedly spending thousands.

At midnight the bar closed, and Maguire’s group waited outside for a minibus to take them back.

They and the police dispute what happened next. According to transcripts of the court hearing days later, Maguire and his group were arguing with two other men when they were spotted by plainclothes police.

Four officers tried to ‘calm things down’, police claim. The two men walked away, but Maguire’s group ‘started creating problems’.

Maguire is said to have become abusive, telling officers: ‘F*** the police, f*** you all.’

But he has claimed his younger sister Daisy had been approached by two men and injected with an unknown substance and began to pass in and out of consciousness.

Instead of getting help, he said police beat him and denied officers’ accusations that he tried to bribe them.

The Man United club captain told The Times in November: ‘Some people will believe me, some people won’t.

‘But one thing I would say about Mykonos is that I have no regrets. I don’t worry about what the outcome is going to be. I don’t worry about anything to do with it because my conscience is so clear about what happened that night.

‘The people who were there that night, there were nine of us, we all understand what went on and what happened.’

Maguire’s holiday to Portugal comes as the England defender is still waiting to discuss whether he has a future at Old Trafford after falling out of favour with manager Erik ten Hag.

He was pictured arriving to United’s Carrington training complex on Saturday morning, having returned from Portugal.

Manchester United are reported to have put a £50million price tag on Maguire who has two years left on his contract and are said to sell the £190,000-a-week star ahead of the new season.

He became the most expensive defender in 2019 when he was signed by the Red Devils from Leicester City for £80 million.
