A TEEN girl is among two people seriously injured after a helicopter crashed into a lava field

The tourism chopper came down near South Point, Hawaii at around 5:30pm local time on Wednesday.


It’s not known what caused the helicopter crash.

Cyrus Johnasen, of Hawaii County, said six people were on board the helicopter at the time of the accident.

Officials said the pilot – a man, 50 – and a girl, 18, were found in a serious condition and have been airlifted to hospital, Hawaii News Now reports.

Her condition appears to be worsening, according to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The pilot was initially trapped in the aircraft before he was rescued, WOKV reports.

Meanwhile, two women, 18 and 19, and a man, 23, have been taken to hospital by ambulance.

The victims have not been identified as investigations remain ongoing.

Pictures shared on social media show the mangled wreckage of the heavily damaged chopper.

The helicopter rotor looks twisted and its doors are hanging off their hinges.

Mitch Roth, the mayor of Hawaii County, described the situation as "fluid".

Fire crews had to send helicopters to rescue the victims as they couldn't access the wreckage by road.

The aircraft crashed at the southernmost tip of Hawaii's Big Island.

Four people died after a US Navy contractor's helicopter crashed on the island of Kauai in February.

The victims were identified as pilot Daniel Maurice, 64, Patrick Rader, 55, Erika Tevez-Valdez, 42, and Matthew Haider, 44.
