Heartless Russian forces ‘bomb newborn babies as brave nurses shelter tots’

Vladimir Putin's advancing forces dropped bombs on newborn babies who cowered in the basement of a hospital alongside brave nurses, it has been reported.

Newborns, some only hours old, were rushed from the neonatal unit at Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Children’s Hospital in Dnipro, to the basement to shelter from bombs.

Dr Denis Surkov, 51, chief of the neonatal unit told The Sun: "This is the neonatal intensive care unit. In a bomb shelter. Can you imagine? This is our reality."

Dnipro was one of several cities bombed yesterday (February 24).

Following reports of attacks on kindergartens and orphanages, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba accused Russian troops of “war crimes."

At least 100,000 Ukrainians have fled the country, with up to five million more expected to also head towards bordering eastern European countries.

But men from 18-60 were hastily forced to conscript into the Ukranian Army, some being yanked off fleeing buses.

US visitor Manny Marotta, 25, who walked more than 43 miles to the Polish border, said: “There were essentially conscription units pulling every man between the age of 18 and 60 from his family.

“Sons were taken from their mothers as they tried to make it to safety. It was harrowing to see.”

Olga Malchevska was on BBC World News when images of blitzed flats were shown on screen. She said: ‘That footage is literally my home. People there were evacuated into the school.”

A Ukrainian oncology centre has also reportedly been left in flames after Russian forces opened fire on the building.

Shocking footage shot in Melitopol, in the south east of the war-torn nation, showed heavy fire close to the hospital before explosions in the building.

The site then immediately starts to burn before more gunshots are aimed at the centre – used to help those suffering with cancer – leaving dozens of bullet holes.

The footage was shot by a mobile phone and later pans to the right, showing a large red cross on the face of the building confirming it to be a hospital.

Sharing the footage, Ukrainian journalist Christo Grozev said on Twitter: “Terrible.”
