A heroic Border Patrol agent rescued a child migrant from drowning near the Texas border after the boy entered the US illegally.

Agents near Penitas, Texas, on Saturday followed footprints leading away from a river deeper into the US and encountered the boy trying to keep his head above water in a pond that he was trying to cross, according to Customs and Border Protection.

The child tried to hold on to some branches but kept going under.

Video posted on Twitter by Chief Patrol Agent Brian Hastings shows an agent tying a rope around his waist and jumping into the pond to rescue the boy.

The agent can be seen reaching out to the boy and then pulling him along the rope to safety.

The agent and the boy, who is from Guatemala, were treated at the hospital and released.

“A Border Patrol agent risked his life to save a juvenile migrant from drowning,” Hastings wrote in his posting, noting that agents in the Rio Grande Valley have rescued more than 650 people in fiscal year 2021.

The rescue reveals the perilous journey immigrants take to come to the US even as the Biden administration struggles to handle the huge number of unaccompanied migrant children arriving in the US.

In March, a 9-year-old Mexican girl drowned while trying to cross the Rio Grande with her family.

A week before that, a fisherman near the border town of Laredo, Texas, saw a group of migrants without life jackets trying to swim across the Rio Grande.

He managed to save a boy using his fishing pole but he said a woman and two teenage boys drowned.

CPB said two people died.

The Border Patrol agent’s rescue of the boy came a day after Vice President Kamala Harris made her first visit to the border since being named by President Biden in March to oversee the administration’s response to the crisis.

Former President Donald Trump and a group of Republican lawmakers are scheduled to tour the border later Wednesday.
