On June 29, 1978, police in Scottsdale, Arizona, found the dead body of man in an apartment.
The room was splattered with blood. The man, whose corpse lay on a bed, had been bludgeoned to death. He had two huge gashes above his left ear and an electrical cord knotted around his neck.
The dead man was famous. Bob Crane, 49, was known to millions of people across the world as the star of the smash hit TV show Hogan's Heroes.
But Bob also had a secret – he was a sex addict, long before the term had even been invented.
Fame had helped make the 'ladies' man' even more attractive to countless women – and few of them were turned down.
The married dad and family man wouldn't just sleep with such women, from housewives to Playboy Bunnies – he would take hardcore pictures and videos of them, carrying around his "collection" in briefcases.
He would often invite his co-stars to gawp at evidence of his X-rated antics.
One of his Hogan's Heroes co-stars, Richard Dawson, said: "He was carting a couple of videotapes and a Polaroid book and said 'Hey, come on in … you want to take a look at this stuff?'"

"It was like, wow, look at this one, look at that one. I don't know if 'proud' is the right word but sort of 'look what I got. She's a real winner, huh?
"It was unnerving., I gotta tell you:. It was a little shocking to see Colonel Hogan au naturel. Couldn't watch Hogan's the same way again after that. He was like a kid with a toy."
Even his wives knew.
'I have affairs because I get turned on filming sex with my married lovers'
His second wife, actress Sigrid Valdis, who he met on Hogan's Heroes, told ABC news: "From almost the first day on the set he told me his hobby was photography — I didn't figure it was landscape.
"He brought over a double-thick briefcase, and it was filled with thousands of slides in there … of all the women in his life."
She never stopped his affairs
"Maybe people will think I am crazy," she said. "Bob used these women. He said, 'I wish when I finished with them I could just push a button and they'd fall through the floor and disappear.' Now, how could I be jealous of something like that? He treated women like the rest of the world treats toilet paper. Who's going to be jealous of toilet paper?
"They were using each other. Everybody was getting what they wanted out of this. I knew he wouldn't stop. I knew that he had this obsession, he couldn't help it, there was nothing for me to be jealous of."
When police found his body, there was a prime suspect.
John Carpenter worked for Sony Electronics as a video expert. He also shared Bob's obsession with X-rated antics and became his partner in porn, the two of them frequently filming themselves engaged in foursomes.
But the two were about to fall out.
Bob's son Robert later said: "He wanted to lose people like John Carpenter, who had become a pain in the butt. He wanted a clean slate. They had a breakup, of sorts. Carpenter lost it. He was being rejected, he was being spurned like a lover. There are eyewitnesses at a club in Scottsdale that said they had an argument."
The next day Bob was dead. All roads led to Carpenter. There was no forced entry, Bob's blood was found in Carpenter's car. However, with no other evidence it took police 12 years to finally bring a case against him.
They lost, the defence pointing out they were friends, the blood evidence was ruled inadmissible and there could be hundreds of suspects, the husbands or boyfriends of women Bob had sex with, and recorded the deed.
The police had also bungled the case, losing evidence and allowing people to tramp through the crime scene.
Carpenter, who was acquitted in 1994 and died four years later.
Bob's murder remains unsolved.
