Horrific injuries of defenceless pensioner, 87, revealed after sick burglar beat him in his own home

A DEFENCELESS pensioner suffered horrific injuries after a callous burglar beat him in his own home.

Drug addict Samantha McDonnell, 37,  broke into the sheltered accommodation where the 87-year-old man was living in Bartley Green, a suburb of Birmingham, and demanded money from him before hitting him until he fell on the floor.

McDonnell even unplugged her victim’s phone so he could not call for help.

He was beaten so badly on March 4 this year he was admitted to hospital with a bleed on the brain and a broken nose.

Investigators later discovered she had stolen from three people at the property in Hasbury Court, including two pensioners and a support worker.

McDonnell was arrested the next day at her flat in Bartley Green.

The stolen property was found in her flat, along with the clothing she was wearing at the time of the offences.

McDonnell admitted to attempting to use the stolen bank card.

A support worker also filmed her near the offence location shortly after the incidents took place.

She was also picked out in an ID parade by three different people.

As the evidence mounted up, she had no choice but to plead guilty.

McDonnell was given a prison sentence of seven-and-a-half years for theft, robbery at Birmingham Crown Court on April 28.

She will have to serve at least two thirds of it before being able to be considered for release.

West Midland Police said in a statement: "While McDonnell is a drug addict and her addiction likely drove her to commit the crimes she did, addiction can be no excuse for violence against a vulnerable, elderly person.

“Our thoughts remain with the man she attacked as he continues to recover from the horrible ordeal that was inflicted on him."

Her battered and traumatised victim has since been released from hospital.
