A 78-year-old who thought he was helping an injured bird found out the hard way that seagulls are as ungrateful as they are hungry when one took a "chunk" out of his forehead in a vicious attack.
Retired bus driver Kenny Esson spotted a baby seagull as it “crash landed” in his yard.
Seeing that the fluffy grey bird was struggling to fly over his back wall, Kenny carefully scooped it up and was lifting it to safety when he felt a sudden impact on the back of his head.

Moments later, he realised there was blood streaming down his face and a “chunk” had been taken out of his forehead.
Kenny told the Press and Journal: “I tried to help it out of the gate, and quickly then managed to put it over the wall.
“But I didn’t see the parent coming, and the next thing this big seagull came in behind me. They have sharp beaks.
“It’s not the first time I’ve been bumped but it’s the first time it’s drawn blood.”
Kenny told the Scottish Sun that a second gull then swooped in to attack him.
He added: "Luckily, I ducked and that one missed. If they’d connected then I dread to think what would have happened.
"The whole side of my face would have been gone. As it was, they only managed to get a chunk out of my forehead."

Since the dive-bombing attack Kenny has kept his granddaughter’s staffie with him when he ventures out into his garden to help deter the raiders.
Kenny says that seagulls in the area are becoming much more numerous, and much more aggressive – something he puts down to by locals unwisely feeding them.
Having grown up in rural Tarland, Kenny’s views on the growing gull menace in his neighbourhood are uncompromising: “When herring gulls would land at Tarland we shot them because they would attack the lambs.
“That’s what needs to happen now.
“These are no longer seagulls," he said. "They don’t even know where the sea is.”
