HORSE tranquilliser ketamine could help women with untreatable depression, say scientists.

A low dose of the potentially lethal party drug combats it by triggering neurons in the brain, a study showed.

Antidepressants may take months to kick in but it is hoped ketamine will be almost immediate.

US researchers in Colorado and Massachusetts said: “A single, low dose of ketamine promotes resilience to future adverse events.”

The drug is class B and can be prescribed as a general anaesthetic in humans and animals.
