How many people died in the Fort Worth I-35 crash?

THE icy I-35 highway in Fort Worth, Texas caused a 100-car pile-up that resulted in six deaths and at least 65 injured and hospitalized.

The horrific interstate crash occurred the morning of Thursday, February 11, leaving 100 cars and trucks piled-up on the icy highway.

Who died in the Fort Worth I-35 crash?

The Fort Worth Fire Department told The Sun that rescue teams had to cut people out of their vehicles and "multiple patients" were transported to hospital.

The spokesman added that many vehicles obtained "extensive damage."

The deadly crash left six dead and at least 65 people are being treated at local hospitals, with injuries ranging from minor to severe.

Officials are still searching through cars and trucks to make sure no one is still stuck inside.

Officer Brad Perez confirmed to The Sun that there were three casualties and that cops are still actively working on the accident.

Footage, reportedly from the scene, showed several cars that were damaged.

Some vehicles were strewn across the freeway, and several semi trucks appeared to be involved.

What caused the deadly incident?

Police confirmed that the incident was due to the weather and for drivers to expect "lengthy delays."

The incident happened while the region is under a winter weather advisory.

"The weather conditions are definitely a factor in this massive multi-car accident," police dfficer Daniel Segura told CNN.

The Dallas-Fort Worth areas saw light freezing rain and some sleet the morning of February 11.

About one-10th of an inch of ice accumulated just north of Fort Worth, the National Weather Service said.

The area is under a winter weather advisory until 6pm because of ice accumulation, which would result in "very slippery sidewalks, roads and bridges," the weather service said.

"So many traffic/accidents this morning, especially across the DFW Metroplex," the NWS Fort Worth office tweeted.

"These events are so dangerous because the ice is spotty. We can't stress enough that road conditions could go from good to dangerous within blocks. Take it slow out there… #dfwwx #ctxwx #txwx."

How can I avoid traffic if I'm in the area?

All lanes have been blocked and the scene is not expected to be cleared before the end of the day.
