A ‘violent’ fire erupted at a money-printing factory in France this morning.

Dramatic pictures show smoke rising from the Banque de France printing works in Chamalières on Wednesday.

The blaze spread after breaking out in a ‘restricted room’, Le Bien Public reports.

Nearly 400 people are said to have been evacuated as around 70 firefighters raced to the scene at 10.15am.

Around 24 people are believed to be minorly injured, with some reports suggesting there could have been up to 39 harmed.

At least four people were taken to hospital including two firefighters, a report published by the prefecture reportedly states.

The fire was largely under control by midday and there remains no danger to locals, officials said.

There will ‘inevitably be an impact’ on production but bosses reportedly believe the incident won’t pose a major issue.

‘We will have to put in place appropriate measures (…) it could have been worse’, said site director Pierre-Yves Boissinot.

The cause remains unknown and an investigation has been launched.

Officials said no toxic products were involved.

Posting on Twitter, the Banque de France said: ‘The fire is under control, the site has been evacuated and the employees are safe.’
