‘I was asked out by Ted Bundy – then later found out he was serial killer’

Ted Bundy is one of the most well-known serial killers in history – but the full extent of his crimes is still unknown.

One American grandmother has revealed how she almost became one of his victims after a run-in with him only a week before his name hit the headlines.

Bundy was an American serial killer who kidnapped, raped and murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970s and possibly earlier.

He eventually confessed to 30 homicides – the total number is not definitively known – committed in seven states between 1974 and 1978.

TikTok user @jordyn_renee_taylor uploaded a video of her grandma revealing how she met Bundy when he came up to her when she was in a clothing store.

"This guy was coming towards me as I was coming in. He stopped me and he goes 'Hi you're a very beautiful woman.' He was good looking himself but he was kind of preppy but he was good looking. He had curly hair," she explained.

Her description of Bundy matches the opinion of him at the time.

Once he was caught, he was often described as handsome and charismatic – traits that he exploited to win people's trust.

The gran continued: "He says, 'Would you go out for coffee with me?' and I said 'No I'm a married woman and I'm in a hurry.' He kept insisting, he kept on, and I said 'No I can't, I really gotta go.'

"Finally I think I just took off. I don't remember where he went, I wasn't paying attention."

The woman went on to say that her sons were being looked after by a friend, so she went to the back of the store to give them a call.

"As I was on the phone to Earl, here [Bundy] is in his little VW pulled up right in front of the doors where I was standing. He just sat there looking at me like I was going to come out in the car with him," she said.

Bundy would typically approach his victims in public places and lure them to his car, before knocking them unconscious and taking them to a different location to rape and strangle them.

"There was no way I was going to get in the car with him. So I just got off the phone, turned around and went back inside," the grandma continued.

"Then I was afraid to leave the store and I didn't know it was Ted Bundy at the time but later that week there was the news on and they were talking about him and all of the girls."

The woman went on to explain that Bundy almost didn't take no for an answer.

"He was really persistent. He kept going on and on wanting me to go for a cup of coffee," she said.

"I was afraid to leave because I didn't know if he was out in the parking lot just waiting. I think I asked one of the workers if they could walk out with me.

"Then I got into my car and I kept watching to make sure no one was following me because I didn't want him to know where I lived."

Thankfully she wasn't followed, and the next time the woman saw Bundy was on her TV screen once he'd been caught.

While the story of one of the most prolific serial killer in American history is well-known, we will never know the full extent of Bundy’s vicious crimes.

Bundy confessed to 30 murders, but the true body count is thought to be much higher than that.

Some numbers suggest he could have killed 100 or more between 1974 and 1978.

The serial killer was 42-years-old when he was executed by electrocution on January 24, 1989 at Florida State Prison.

This was a full nine years after his sentencing, thanks to a lengthy appeals process.
