A professional piercer has revealed the four kinds of piercings she would never give to her customers.

Marie Hilellis, owner of Alter Ego Studios in Sydney, Australia, shared the list on her TikTok.

The video opens with a shot of Marie with text reading: ‘Piercings I don’t offer since I opened my own professional piercing studio.’

Read on to find out if you have any of them.

Marie Hilellis, owner of Alter Ego Studios in Sydney, posted the list of four piercings she does not offer

First on Marie’s list were dermal piercings, which have no exit point form the skin

Dermal piercings

First on the list is dermal piercings.

These are piercings which have no exit point unlike normal piercings, and are known to be more prone to infection that other types of piercing.

This is also known as rejection, and causes the piercing hole to go red, swell up, itch, or shrink.

Horizontal tongue piercings, AKA ‘snake eyes’

‘Snake eyes’ can cause damage to your teeth and gums, so were also on Marie’s banned list

‘Snake eyes’ piercings were second on the list.

These go horizontally through the tongue and are  problematic because they can damage your teeth and gums.

One commenter said: ‘People who DO offer snake eyes should be a red flag,’ to which Marie responded ‘TOTALLY.’

Another said: ‘Thank god you refuse to do snake eyes! Immediate respect.’

Dimple piercings

Multiple people commenting on the TikTok mentioned that dimple piercing can be dangerous for a number of reasons

Dimple piercings were next, and these are known to struggle to heal, as was testified by one TikTok user.

They commented: ‘As someone with dimple piercings, I respect this. Most people can’t care for them properly.’

Another added: ‘Dimples take a long time to heal, they flare up really bad, drool leaks out of them, and people have cracked their teeth biting down on them.’

Someone else they ‘love the look of cheek piercings’ but would never get one because of the risk of being ‘permanently bothered’ when eating.

Multiple other commenters also referenced the risk of severing saliva glands when getting a dimple piercing.

Snug piercings

Snug piercings were last on the list, and Marie even did a follow-up video explaining why they were included

Last on Marie’s list were snug piercings.

These go through the cartilage on the outer ridge of the ear, and Marie posted a second video on her account, piercingsby_marie, explaining why she does not offer them.

She said: ‘Snug piercings are really hard to heal.

‘In the last five years that I’ve been a piercer I’ve only seen one or two fully healed.’

She also pointed out that most people do not have the appropriate anatomy – enough tissue in that area, and right ear shape – to get one safely.

‘I don’t like offering piercings that are not going to heal well, or going to be really difficult for the client,’ she added.

Instead, Marie recommended a faux-snug –  piercing the conch and mid-helix to give the illusion of a snug piercing.

Those who saw her two videos agreed.

One said that their snug piercing ‘was the biggest mistake ever,’ while another said she had tried to get one twice and neither healed.
