Immigration agents found a 2-year-old boy abandoned by the side of the road in Mexico after migrants inside a sweltering truck forced the driver to let them out because a man had apparently suffocated inside the trailer, the National Migration Institute said Tuesday.
When the agents came upon the truck near Veracruz, they encountered eight migrants who were sprawled on the ground nearby, and not far away, near a guardrail, the boy standing shirtless by himself.
Littered around the scene were packaged snacks, water bottles, clothes and black trash bags, according to the institute.
Inside the truck, immigration agents and National Guard members found the body of a 25-year-old man who apparently suffocated in the stifling heat, the institute said.
The truck was believed to have been carrying more than 100 migrants from Central America to the US when people inside the trailer, suffering from the intense heat and lack of air, began banging on the walls and shouting for the driver to pull over.
When one of the “guides” opened the trailer door, the migrants jumped out and fled.
The eight were too ill to escape and the boy was apparently abandoned.
None of the remaining adults said they were relatives of the kid, who may be from Guatemala.
The boy was put in the custody of the child welfare authorities.
The adults were taken to a migration station.
The Biden administration has been struggling to handle the influx of unaccompanied migrant children from Mexico and Central America arriving in the US.
And last Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris traveled to the border for the first time since President Biden named her to oversee the White House’s immigration efforts in March.
The statistics indicate the level of crisis at the border — with the number of detentions hitting a 21-year monthly high of more than 180,000 in May.
In April, nearly 179,000 people were detained at the border.
And stories of children like the 2-year-old found by Mexican officials abound.
In one particularly harrowing case, smugglers dropped 5-year-old and 3-year-old girls over a border fence in New Mexico in March.
