Is author J.D. Vance running for the Senate in Ohio?
J.D. Vance, 36, has officially launched his political career by entering Ohio's Republican Senate primary on Thursday July 1, 2021.
"We need a new politics for a new generation," Vance said at a kickoff party for his campaign in his home town of Middletown. "The old way of doing things ain’t working."
In a state that voted for former President Donald Trump twice, Vance is running in the same political party as him, despite criticizing his policies, particularly on race and immigration.
In 2016, Vance said Trump was "terrible for the country," and many expect his comments to come back and hurt him going into the Senate race.
"I want to be not just a fighter, but a fighter who's fighting for you," Vance said.
Who is J.D. Vance?
Middletown, Ohio native, Vance is an American author and venture capitalist.
He is best known for publishing his book Hillbilly Elegy: A memoir of a family and culture in crisis.
The book is a memoir about the Appalachian values of his Kentucky native family and their relation to the social problems in Middletown.
The book was turned into a Netflix movie that was released back in 2020.
After high school, Vance enlisted in the Marine Corps where he served in Iraq before graduating from Ohio State University and Yale Law School.
He currently works as an investor at a venture capital firm and has contributed to the New York Times and National Review.
Is J.D. Vance married?
Since 2014, Vance has been married to his wife, Usha Chilukuri Vance.
Usha currently works as a litigation associate for Munger, Tolles, & Olson. Her primary focus is on complex civil litigations and appeals.
She also has a Law Degree from Yale Law School where she was the executive development editor of the Yale Law Journal as well as the managing editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology.
She is licensed to practice law in California, Ohio, and the District of Columbia.
The couple met while they both attended Law School and got married shortly after graduation.
Together the couple have two children together, son Edwan Blaine, 4, and another son, but no information is available on him.
