ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi 'injured' during coalition airstrike on the group's Syria stronghold of Raqqa

ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi has been wounded following an airstrike by the US-led coalition.

The terror group's head was in its self-declared capital Raqqa when he was injured by a missile, local media has reported.

Iraqi TV station Al Sumariya cited local sources that the cleric was injured alongside several other members of the group's top brass on Thursday.

The terrorist group has published no official confirmation of the reports.

And the anti-ISIS coalition's spokesman Colonel Chris Garver urged caution as he said the news could not be confirmed definitely.

Officials within the US defence department had previously admitted they were not entirely sure where Baghdadi was holed up.

One told CNN: "Baghdadi remains extremely careful."

The evil Iraqi cleric is known to have been personally responsible the rape and torture of US aid worker Kayla Mueller.

Baghdadi forced the 26-year-old to marry him, after which he repeatedly raped her.

Mueller was killed during a Jordanian airstrike on ISIS in February last year.

The United States has a £7million price on Baghdadi's head.

He was previously held by US forces in the city of Fallujah in 2004 during their invasion of the country.

Baghdadi was released within six months and would go on to be declared the leader of ISIS – then known as al-Qaeda in Iraq – in 2010.
