Joe Biden mocked for ‘falling asleep’ during speech at Cop26 climate summit

Joe Biden was caught resting his eyes during the opening ceremony of Cop26 and many viewers reckoned he was "falling asleep".

The 78-year-old US President is unkindly nicknamed "sleepy Joe" by critics because of his gaffes, such as falling over three times when trying to board a plane.

He arrived in Glasgow on Monday morning (November 1) to join world leaders for the climate change conference.

Unfortunately, the president appeared to struggle to keep his eyes open while listening to the opening speeches, Daily Record reports.

He appeared tired and possibly jetlagged during Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley's speech about global warming.

Washington Post journalist Zach Pursur Brown filmed the president "falling asleep" and shared the clip on Twitter.

Piers Morgan was quick to comment as he retweeted the video and wrote: "Jeez… not the best look when you’re trying to tell the world to wake up."

Another person wrote: "The camera had to shift off Joe Biden pretty quick, as he closed eyes for a few moments too long.

"Poor bloke. I hope he's got a lift home."

Other blunders at COP26 so far include when Prince Charles briefly tripped up on his way up to the stage but recovered in time to give an opening speech.

He said: "The scale and scope of the threat we face call for a global, systems-level solution based on radically transforming our current fossil fuel-based economy to one that is genuinely renewable and sustainable."

Meanwhile, the Queen has paid a heartfelt tribute to "my dear late husband" Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh for his environmental awareness in her speech for the conference.

The monarch was not able to attend in person due to health issues but made a video that was aired to the delegates.

She conceded "none of us will live forever" but said for the sake of future generations, the planet must be saved.
